Federal Money to Aid Four Central New York Fire Departments Buy Fire Equipment

Four Central New York fire departments will share about $944,000 in federal aid after winning competitive grants to buy new equipment.

The largest share — $546,429 — will be sent to Fleming Volunteer Fire Department #1 in Cayuga County to buy a new fire truck.

The other grants through the Department of Homeland Security’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program will go to:

  • The Jamesville Fire Department in Onondaga County ($168,595) to buy 26 new air packs, replacing equipment that is 15 to 20 years old.
  • The City of Cortland Fire Department in Cortland County ($211,964) to buy 30 new air packs for firefighters.
  • The Sennett Fire Department in Cayuga County ($17,143) to buy a commercial washer and dryer system to keep turnout gear in good condition.

U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., and Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., and Rep. John Katko, R-Camillus, supported the fire departments in their grant applications.
