FDNY Fire Apparatus Hits Pedestrian

A city fire truck with lights and sirens blaring struck a man running across a street near Union Square Saturday, hospitalizing him with a severe leg injury, police and witnesses said.

The Ladder Company 3 truck driving on Irving Place while responding to a report of a gas leak, hit a man crossing E. 15th Street at around 8:15 p.m, an NYPD spokesman said.

The 34-year-old was propelled from the crosswalk into the intersection, where he somehow wound up underneath the truck, witnesses told the Daily News.

“I was standing here. I heard the firefighter say, ‘Stay still! Stay still! That’s how I knew something was wrong,” said Ram Roland, a bouncer at a nearby bar. “I saw him underneath the truck.”

He was taken to Bellevue Hospital with a severe leg injury but is expected to live, police said.
