The Eustis Fire Department officially opens its second fire station today.
Fire Station 23, located at 1800 Hicks Ditch Road, is constructed on 2.5 acres of land just south of the intersection of County Road 44 East, Miranda Burrowes, public relations specialist for the city, said in a press release. It will serve north Eustis, including a few mobile home parks, the heavily-populated Bates Avenue area, shopping centers at State Road 19 and County Road 44 and the nearby fairgrounds.
The city currently has a fire station located on Norton Avenue, which receives approximately 4,000 calls annually, Burrowes said. An estimated one third of these calls now will be answered by firefighters from the new Hicks Ditch station. Station 23 will have three personnel assigned to it who are all cross-trained to handle medical emergencies.
“This station has been a long time coming,” Fire Chief Rex Winn said the release. “It will give us quicker response times, better coverage and will ultimately help save lives.”
The station features 1,850 square feet of living space and an approximate 1,600 square-foot vehicle bay that will house an ALS engine and a brush truck to help with wildfires, Burrowes said. City public-works employees took care of the site work and Wagner3 Ventures handled the construction of the $350,000 building which was paid for by impact fees.
