A fire truck rolled over Wednesday, knocking down wires and closing a state highway.
Effingham Fire Chief Randy Burbank was alone in the truck, headed to the nearby fire station along Route 53. The crash is under investigation, but Deputy Chief William Piekut said he believes Burbank hit ice or slush while rounding the corner, lost control, slid into the pole and flipped over.
Burbank was able to walk away from the crash but was checked at a hospital as a precaution.
“[The fire truck] might be beyond repair,” Piekut said. “They don’t take kindly to being upside down, but we’ve got another truck on order that’s due in February, so we should be OK.”
