Chief Brian Ball of the Delhi Township Fire Department said the truck went into the median of west bound I-96 Saturday morning, damaging it substantially.
The truck was traveling around 20 mph when it hit a patch of black ice. The truck weighs more than twenty tons, making it difficult to slow down in slick conditions.
The driver of the fire truck chose to go into the median, rather than take the chance to hit nearby cars. No one was hurt in the accident, but the truck sustained a lot of damage.
The fire department will meet with the manufacturer in the next few days to assess the damage, and determine what to do with the vehicle.
This will reduce the fire department’s capacity, but the chief feels that people shouldn’t be worried, as other departments help each other out when needed.
