Firefighters can now add RSDecon’s RSDL, a chemical warfare (CW) decontaminant, to the protective equipment they carry. The lotion had been available only to military organizations.
RSDL removes and neutralizes CW agents and T2 toxin on the skin within two minutes. Deployed by troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, it has been cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for external use. Contact with eyes and mucous membranes and prolonged contact with skin should be avoided.
In emergency conditions, RSDL does not require immediate removal from the skin, but should be rinsed off as soon as possible. An ingredient in the lotion is absorbed. Studies show RSDL left on the body for 24 hours had minimal adverse effects, but research beyond that timeframe were not conducted.
