Davenport (IA) aldermen voted to award a $383,600 contract to start the design and engineering work for a new fire station slated to be built by 2024, according to a report published by the Quad-City Times.

The city previously purchased land a about a mile from the current station which was built in the 1960s, according to the report.

An operational study done in 2018 suggested the city needed a new fire station for a variety of reasons, including the need to improve response times to the northern part of the city which has seen increased call volumes as the city grows, according to the newspaper.

For the design and engineering work, the city had appropriated $400,000 and included construction of the new station in its 6-year capital improvement plan, according to the newspaper, that reported the total cost for the project has not been determined but will be funded tax dollars through bonding.
