Coventry (RI) May Lose Fire Apparatus

The financially-strapped Central Coventry Fire District (RI) can keep its ladder truck, for the time-being.

A hearing to return the fire truck for failure to make an annual payment was scheduled before Superior Court Judge Brian Stern, who is overseeing the case of the troubled fire district. Court-appointed receiver Richard Land said all parties involved agreed to hold off on a decision until after a new board is in place. A special election is scheduled for later this month.

Land said that hearing will likely happen the week after a new board takes over. The election will take place at Coventry town hall from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 29.

The district purchased the truck in 2009 and is supposed to make an annual payment of $97,000. Land said they did not make the last installment and the loan is past due.

The firefighter’s union has objected to returning the truck.
