Commerce Township (MI) Man Arrested After Stealing Fire Apparatus

Oakland County sheriff’s deputies said a 32-year-old Commerce Township man stole a Commerce Township fire truck about 4:20 p.m. Friday.

Jason Lehto was charged with the auto theft Sunday and released on a personal bond, WDIV, Channel 4 News reports.

The Commerce Township Fire Department alerted authorities that the fire struck was stolen from in front of the fire station where it was parked.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Department dispatched deputies and a helicopter to search for the missing truck.

The helicopter spotted the fire tuck parked near the emergency room at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce Township, sheriff’s officials said in a statement Sunday.

Hospital security said Lehto got into an ambulance after arriving at the hospital, but then began walking on the hospital grounds.

Deputies “located the subject walking through the parking lot and patrol deputies arrived on scene,” the sheriff’s statement says. “The suspect was taken into custody and subsequently transported” for questioning.

Lehto was placed in the Oakland County jail until his release on Sunday.
