The new Caney Branch Volunteer Fire Department station is open for business.
Final preparations were made to move fire trucks and other apparatus to the 10,000-square-foot, six-bay prefabricated steel building at 11423 Newport Highway.
Firefighters, community volunteers and contractors have been hard at work for more than six months building and fitting out the station. The groundbreaking ceremony was held last May.
The fire department officially made the move Thursday from its former fire station, which dates to 1974 and is now the property of the Tennessee Department of Transportation.
The new fire station includes a large community room, a kitchen and offices for communications and record keeping. The yet-to-be-finished second floor will eventually house a training area, meeting room, offices for fire department officers, a sleeping area and showers for fire department members, a workout room and a space where firefighters can relax after a call.
