For more than a decade, the Fox Crossing Tavern near Ocklawaha has been known for the 1949 Ward La France fire truck that sits out front.
The owner of the bar, John Leonard, decided it was time to spruce up the landmark and has raised money for the project through one of the bar’s signature benefit events.
“Fox Crossing is well known for benefits. I try to help everybody,” Leonard said. “I buy all the food. I make my money out of the beer, and 100 percent of the donations go to those in need. We do one every month or every two months.”
The fire truck was moved to its location in front of 10932 E. County Road 25 in 2002, and it came from a nearby resident.
“I really don’t know the history of the truck,” Leonard said. “All I know is I have the title inside.”
The plan is to give the truck a more dignified pedestal. Leonard plans to form a rectangle out of railroad crossties and fill it in with gravel. The truck will sit on the gravel, raised off the ground.
