Albuquerque (NM) Fire Rescue had previously purchased a custom pumper from Ferrara Fire Apparatus, having Ferrara match its existing pumper configuration as closely as possible. When the department bought a second custom pumper from Ferrara, it kept the configuration much the same but modified it somewhat to make it a clean cab pumper.
“The biggest deal was moving the [self contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)] out of the cab, which allowed us to use seats that are a lot more comfortable than SCBA seats,” says Nathaniel Meisner, Albuquerque battalion chief. The seats installed in the pumper are USSC Valor nonSCBA seats covered with Valor XC Cordura 1000 seat material.

Mike Mueller, Ferrara’s southwest regional sales manager, says the Albuquerque clean cab pumper is built on a Ferrara Inferno chassis and XD 100 long four door (LFD) cab with seating for five firefighters. “The pumper has an extruded aluminum body and is powered by a Cummins 500-horsepower (hp) ISX15 diesel engine and an Allison 4500 EVS automatic transmission,” Mueller says. The gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) on the pumper is 48,000 pounds, he adds, while the wheelbase is 184 inches, overall length is 31 feet 8 inches, and overall height 9 feet 7 inches.
The pumper has a Waterous CSU 2,000-gallon-per-minute (gpm) side-mount pump, a 500-gallon water tank, a 20-gallon Class A foam tank, all Akron Brass valves, a pinnable Mercury monitor deck gun on a Task Force Tips Extend-A-Gun, two 1¾-inch hose crosslays of 200 feet each above the pump, and 100 feet of 1¾-inch hose in a black Turtle Tile lined compartment in the 18-inch front bumper extension.

Service area: The department provides fire protection and EMS to the city of Albuquerque, New Mexico. The department is responsible for an area of 189.5 square miles with more than 559,227 population. Albuquerque Fire Rescue firefighters and paramedics responded to more than 109,000 fire and EMS incidents in 2018.
Other apparatus: 21 front-line engines, seven aerial ladders, one heavy rescue truck, two squads, three wildland brush trucks, 20 rescues (ambulances), one rehab unit, one air unit, four battalion chiefs.
Meisner says Albuquerque had Ferrara install two emergency medical service (EMS) compartments accessible only from the outside in the cab where the rear-facing seating would be located. The driver’s side EMS compartment holds an EMS trauma bag, suction compartment, mass casualty incident (MCI) triage kit, flashlights, spare glove boxes, teddy bears, and other EMS equipment, he points out, while the officer’s side EMS compartment holds a CO2 monitor, keys, spare oxygen bottle, and Life Pack 15 monitor/defribrilator. An overhead compartment that runs the width of the cab over the EMS compartments holds a long traction splint and four ballistic vests, Mueller adds.
With the SCBA removed from the cab, they needed to be in a handy place for access, Mueller points out. Two SCBA for the driver and a firefighter are located in the driver’s side L1 compartment on a slide-out tray along with the driver’s personal protective equipment (PPE), one 5-inch soft suction, one 2½-inch soft suction, and various tools. On the officer’s side in the R1 compartment are two more SCBA (for the officer and a firefighter) on a slide-out tray, a decon kit, thermal imaging camera, floor dry, Microblaze water extinguisher, and bodily fluid cleanup supplies.

3 Albuquerque had Ferrara put its ladders and hard suction in an enclosed tunnel accessed from the rear that holds two pike poles, two 10-foot lengths of hard suction, a 24-foot two-section extension ladder, a 14-foot roof ladder, and a 10-foot folding attic ladder.

The L2 compartment over the wheel has nozzles and hose appliances mounted, along with various hand tools, a scoop shovel, and push broom for motor vehicle accident cleanups. In the R2 compartment over the officer’s side wheel well are forcible entry hand tools, a piercing nozzle, and a foam pickup hose.
The driver’s side L3 compartment is set up to hold extrication equipment, Mueller points out, holding a pair of step chocks, an air bag controller and hoses, a reciprocating saw case, air bags, cribbing, an air bag air cylinder, and a full set of hydraulic extrication tools. The officer’s side R3 compartment holds salvage covers, utility rope, a 1¾-inch garden assault pack, a pair of 2½-inch 150-foot stairway shoulder packs, a standpipe connection kit, and the Mercury monitor.
The pumper’s rear compartment holds a positive-pressure ventilation fan, a fuel can, and cones, while the enclosed ladder compartment holds two pike poles, two 10-foot lengths of hard suction, a 24-foot two-section extension ladder, a 14-foot roof ladder, and a 10-foot folding attic ladder.

Coffin compartments on each side of the top of the pumper hold wildland hand tools, a trash hook, backboard, hose clamp, wildland Travis pack, wildland urban interface hose kit, wildland fire shelters, firefighter wildland PPE in bags, and river rescue kit. On the driver’s side in the rear fender storage compartments are four spare SCBA bottles, and on the officer’s side are an ABC fire extinguisher, a water extinguisher, and a CO2 extinguisher.
Meisner says that the pumper’s hosebed is set up to carry 1,000 feet of 5-inch large-diameter hose (LDH), 800 feet of 2½-inch supply line, and 250 feet of 2½-inch dead lay, all protected by an aluminum hosebed cover.
Mueller notes that the pumper has JW Speaker LED Evolution 8800 alternating flashing headlights, Whelen LED emergency lighting, two Whelen M6 LED scene lights, two Dual Pioneer Plus LED scene lights, a Whelen Pioneer Plus LED brow light, a Kussmaul 20-amp Super Auto-Eject battery charger, an FRC inView 360 camera system, and a Firecom 5100D four position wireless intercom.
