Tom Oakley owns four antique red fire trucks — stored in his home garage in Afton — each are different shapes and sizes. They range in years from 1939 to 1959.
“They have to be at least 25 years old to be antique,” he said.
And the idea is that, soon, the trucks will become the centerpiece of a business idea that will have them chugging down county roads once again.
Oakley is working to start up Antique Fire Truck Rides LLC. He said he hopes to provide fire truck rides for birthday parties, weddings, parades, historical tours and other events.
Oakley always possessed an interest in fire services, ever since he was a kid and started receiving toy trucks from his parents for Christmases and birthdays.
Though he got a degree in fire technology in college, Oakley never pursued the field and went on to become a gardener.
“I was always was into fire trucks, it was in my blood,” he said. “I always wanted a career in it.”
In 2008, he decided to turn his passion into a business after watching a program on TV about a man giving fire truck rides in the Napa Valley, in California.
The four trucks cost Oakley $6,000 to $45,000 each. He started the collection in 2011. Oakley never had the intention of keeping the trucks all to himself.
