The Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved a $209,562 grant request from the Weedsport Fire Department in Cayuga County.
The grant will pay for 25 new self-contained breathing apparatus for firefighters, helmets and self-rescue ropes for firefighters trapped in buildings, acccording to U.S. Sens. Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, and Rep. Dan Maffei.
Maffei, D-Syracuse, said Weedsport firefighters have been using outdated and damaged equipment for years due to financial constraints on the department.
David James, the Weedsport fire chief, said the new equipment will help the department comply with safety standards.
The federal money is from a competitive grant program that helps firefighters and first responders buy new personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles, and pay for training.
