The Brick Township Bureau of Fire Safety posted the following press release on Facebook Monday, Feb. 12:
PRESS RELEASE
At approximately 11:40 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10, a general alarm was transmitted from Brick Dispatch to the Brick Township Fire Department for a working structure fire. It was reported that all residents had already evacuated from the residence. Herbertsville Fire Company Assistant Chief Jim Lepore was the first fire officer on location and confirmed an active fire in the garage.
The fire was suppressed quickly and contained to the garage and attic space above. Herbertsville Fire Company Station 24 was assisted by Laurelton Fire Company, Pioneer Hose Fire Company and Breton Woods Fire Company along with our mutual aid partners. All utilities were secured to the structure and the fire is under investigation by Inspector Robert Kurilla of the Brick Township Bureau of Fire Safety.
During the course of ventilating the garage, a firefighter was exposed to a flammable liquid while utilizing a saw on the front garage door. The firefighter was then exposed to open flame caused by sparks from the saw. He calmly extinguished the flames by lying on the ground and was assisted by other surrounding firefighters immediately. The firefighter was uninjured and was able to return to his duties after being evaluated by EMS. Firefighters face extreme hazards every day and it is important to note that the firefighter was properly dressed in his full personal protective equipment which protected him from severe injury.
