Shreveport firefighter, John Phelan talks safety with retired Shreveport Fire Department Chief of Safety, Sandy Davis in his newest viral video.
The five-minute scene, titled “Wear your PPE…Ret. Chief Sandy Davis and His Story of Cancer,” discusses the importance of firefighters and EMS responders wearing personal protective equipment in emergency response situations.
Davis worked for SFD from 1978-2005, when he retired as Chief of Safety. He’s since become the director of Homeland Security for northwest Louisiana, and has been diagnosed with colorectal cancer — twice.
The cause of Davis’ cancer was attributed to not wearing protective equipment while on the scene of fires.
Now, he hopes to get his message out in hopes of making firefighters today understand the importance of wearing PPE in any fire situation, no matter how small.
