Seward County’s EMS department will soon have a new trailer to help with first responders, and a class from Liberal’s college will help renovate it.
At the county commission’s Oct. 6 meeting, the board approved the purchase of a 20-foot enclosed trailer from Haulmark.
EMS director John Ralston said the purpose of the new trailer is to have a method to easily and quickly respond to a location with the department’s Polaris and other multi-casualty items when needed.
Ralston said the new trailer would also provide a place to store the Polaris that is accessible for rapid response to a location of need and not have to “road” it to that location.
“An enclosed trailer is the most appropriate method to do this, and a grant was requested and received up to $10,000 for this item,” information in the agenda packet for the meeting said.
Ralston said a problem has arose because the Polaris is not mobile when it is stored in the Ag Building or at the Activity Center.
A proposed cost of $10,000 was made for the trailer, and because EMS received the grant in that amount, there will be no financial impact. The trailer that will be purchased was from local vendor Trailers & Trails, and Ralston said online bids were also received.
“The Internet bid prices were over $10 grand,” he said. “They were $11,000.”
The bid from Trailers & Trails was for $9,125, and this includes raising the trailer’s roof about a foot.
