RELM Develops New Mobile Radio Repeater System

RELM Wireless Corporation has introduced a transportable, lightweight, radio repeater system in a waterproof carrying case. Called the Rapid Deployment Portable Repeater (RDPR), it is designed to extend the emergency responder services wireless communications network. A new network can be set up or an existing one moved in minutes, according to the RELM.

“Practical field experience by current uses of  RELM BK radio products contributed to the new design,” said RELM President and Chief Executive Officer David Storey.

Storey said RDPR’s versatility accommodates all levels of portable transceivers  including DPH digital radios that are compliant with the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) Project 25 technical standard.

APCO requires interoperability among compliant equipment regardless of the manufacturer and has been approved by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

“Using RDPR repeaters with two BK Radio DPH digital portable radios, for example, one can quickly build-out an interoperable network capable of digital, analog and mixed-mode operations, rapidly extending a network’s reach as needed,” Storey said.

The stand-alone Rapid Deployment Portable Repeater includes a 14 amp/hr. internal battery, A solar panel addition extends the duty-cycle 30 percent during a 24-hour period, according to RELM.

Charging options include AC wall outlet and vehicle cigarette lighter adapters.

A plug-and-play link to a BK Radio GMH analog mobile or DMH digital mobile radio increases RF power output to 50 or 100 watts, extending signal strength and audio clarity when needed. The weatherproof case has room for an optional internal duplexer. The RDPR is compatible with any RELM Wireless radio system.

The communications interoperability developments gained momentum following the  Oklahoma City bombings, September 11 attacks and most recently Hurricane Katrina.

RELM Wireless Corporation of West Melbourne, Fla., has manufactured and marketed high-specification, two-way communications equipment for public safety, commercial and industrial use for nearly 60 years.
