Kansas City (KS) Firefighter’s Leg Broken When Car Runs Over Hose at Fire Scene

A fire at a Subway restaurant on Southwest Boulevard left a Kansas City, Kansas firefighter severely injured.

The fire occurred Monday morning at the Subway sandwich shop in the 300 block of Southwest Boulevard.

As the firefighter was connecting a supply line to a hydrant, a passing driver accidentally drove over the hose, causing the metal coupling to snap free under high tension, Fox 41 reports.

The coupling struck the firefighter’s lower leg with such force that it caused an open tibia and fibula fracture. Officials confirmed that the firefighter has already undergone one surgery and is expected to have several more during his recovery.

Fortunately, the shop was empty at the time, and no civilian injuries were reported. However, a firefighter suffered a serious injury while setting up the water supply to combat the blaze.

A good Samaritan at the scene driving a white truck used his vehicle to block oncoming traffic and shield the firefighter from further harm.

The driver involved in the hose incident remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Meanwhile, the Subway fire is being treated as arson.
