NASHVILLE, TN–LP® FlameBlock® Fire-Rated Oriented Strand Board (OSB) Sheathing is now approved by CAL FIRE for use in Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) zones as exterior wall sheathing behind LP® SmartSide® lap and panel siding, as well as cedar shingles and lap siding. These CAL-FIRE listed exterior wall assemblies allow builders and homeowners to meet WUI standards while constructing beautiful, durable and fire-resistant homes.
“Builders and architects in high fire-risk zones are seeking code-approved alternatives to fiber cement and 3-coat stucco,” said Judy Musgrove, OSB Marketing Manager. “Now WUI code approved, LP FlameBlock with LP SmartSide siding opens up a wide array of design options while serving as a durable, easy to install, cost effective solution for wall applications in these areas.”
LP FlameBlock offers structural performance and fire resistance in one panel. Created by applying a proprietary, non-combustible, fiberglass-reinforced Pyrotite® coating to LP OSB panels, LP FlameBlock is an ICC certified structural sheathing with a Class A Flame Spread Rating. The product is also Exposure-1 rated, provides burn-through resistance, and contains no hazardous chemicals.
The wall assemblies composed of LP FlameBlock and SmartSide Siding or cedar cladding passed CAL-FIRE’s stringent 12-7A-1 exterior wall tests to earn WUI-zone approval from the Office of the State Fire Marshall.
Outside of WUI zones, LP FlameBlock is an excellent choice for roof decks where vertical continuity of fire walls is required. In fire-rated shear walls, LP FlameBlock may provide a cost-effective alternative to separate layers of gypsum and structural sheathing. The product is available in a variety of PS2-rated thicknesses and lengths, including Struc-1. LP FlameBlock panels deliver full load-span and shear capacity ratings without cupping, warping, splitting or delamination.
