Three local fire departments will be getting some new equipment thanks to a grant awarded by the federal government, officials said Wednesday.
The $1.5-million grant — awarded through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant — will be used to buy new air tanks (or self-contained breathing apparatuses) for firefighters in Collingswood, Pennsauken and Camden City, Congressman Donald Norcross said. The congressman said he started advocating in support of the grant in December of last year and thought it would be a big help for municipalities trying to do more with less.
“It’s great to see these South Jersey communities come together on a joint application that makes financial sense and will ultimately protect the well-being of our residents and first responders,” he said in a statement released Wednesday. “This federal grant will ensure that aid reaches the greatest number of people possible — providing life-saving equipment without having to make harmful budget cuts or adding to local taxes.”
