The breathing equipment used by the Phillipsburg Fire Department was purchased more than 20 years ago, officials say.

The department will buy new equipment with a $447,540 grant from the Department of Homeland Security.

Mayor Harry Wyant Jr. said that the grant, combined with $60,000 set aside in the town’s budget, will purchase 54 new air packs and 54 additional air tanks and other accessories.
