Crown Point (IN) FD Adds New EMS Equipment Worth $1.1M

Jan. 31—CROWN POINT — Emergency medical equipment at the Crown Point Fire Department is getting an upgrade this month.

Department leaders announced Friday that they’ll be adding $1.1 million of new equipment for the first time since 2017, according to a news release. Crown Point Fire Chief Mark Baumgardner Jr. said all 52 department members were trained on the new equipment this week and he expects it to be fully implemented in February.

“This investment ensures our firefighter-paramedics stay on the cutting edge with the best equipment available on the market,” Baumgardner said in the news release. “When we respond to calls, we want the community to know their loved one is receiving the highest quality of care from the best paramedics with the most advanced technology available.”

The upgrade, provided through medical technology company Stryker, includes eight LIFEPAK 35 monitors and defibrillators, five powered cots complete with power loaders, five powered stair chairs to move patients and four LUCAS 3 CPR devices.

The LIFEPAK 35 monitor and defibrillator allows EMS professionals to send patient vitals to the hospital instantly, the release said. The device is the most updated of all on the market.

The LUCAS CPR device performs CPR on a patient while paramedics perform other care, which allows them to treat a patient quickly and effectively, the release said.

“Every second counts when we’re responding to a call,” EMS Division Chief Erik Schmitt said. “Being able to send information to the hospital in real-time ensures the best outcome for our patients and their loved ones.”

The powered cots and stair chairs assist paramedics in lifting patients and the stair chairs fit in small spaces. Schmitt said the department’s goal is to avoid any risk of paramedic injury and ensure a focus on the patient.

A video demonstration of the devices is available on the department’s Facebook page.
