The city’s protection and community services committee voted to donate equipment past its 10-year life cycle to Firefighters Without Borders Canada.
If council ultimately approves the donation, used structural firefighting ensembles will be given to the charity until Dec. 31, 2025. The city previously gave such “turnout” gear to individuals to serve as backup pieces or sold it to northern First Nations.
But after concerns over the liabilities involved with North American expiry date standards, the gear was cleaned and disposed of instead.
Councillors were told the donations will now allow foreign fire departments with no other alternative to have better protection.
