A San Antonio Fire Department ambulance was stolen and was later recovered, confirmed a SAPD spokesperson.
A KENS 5 reporter at the scene said the ambulance wrecked into the back of a police cruiser in the middle of the intersection. A sergeant with SAPD confirmed the accident happened during the pursuit of the stolen ambulance.
An officer at the scene told KENS 5 the ambulance was stolen while EMS personnel were treating an injured person near Austin Highway. The injured individual was left behind with EMS when the suspect drove off.
The suspect then struck several squad cars during the pursuit, before hitting a final cruiser at Grayson Street and Avenue B, according to police. The suspect was apprehended at the scene of the wreck. Police said officers had to break the driver-side window of the ambulance to get to the suspect.
Emergency responders were treating the man — while in handcuffs and in the back of a police paddy wagon — for minor injuries. No officers were injured.
