The NFPA’s (National Fire Protection Association) Fire Protection Research Foundation released a September 2011 Analysis of Ambulance Crash Data showing lack of uniformity in reporting ambulance crashes. While some state departments of health and some state motor vehicle departments collect ambulance crash data, many do not. Despite a national EMS encounter reporting structure (NEMSIS), no national effort currently collects or analyzes ambulance crashes. The report, one of the first ever with such a broad scope, summarizes available data, draws conclusions about scope and nature, and makes recommendations for standardization.
