In Canada, Mississauga firefighters say that the department’s supply of N95 respirator face masks is running extremely low and that firefighters will need to start using their SCBA when responding to medical calls.
Officials sent a memo last week directing firefighters to start wearing SCBA as of June 15. However, they say that firefighters’ breathing apparatus is heavy and cumbersome, and it is difficult to communicate with the public while wearing it. Fire department members are now wearing SCBA to calls involving anyone who is sick or injured, including vehicle crashes.
The SCBA also must be decontaminated after use.
