A new fire station will house the San Francisco Fire Department’s three fireboats and rescue watercraft, reports San Francisco Chronicle.
The new building will replace the existing 105-year-old fire station on the Embarcadero. The current building is descried as “undersized.”
Multiple water rescues and disasters like the fire that destroyed a warehouse on Pier 45 back and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake demonstrate the need for the fire station.
The 14,900-square-foot station will be secured by four, 150-foot-long verticle steel pipe guides at its home on Pier 22 1/2.
The $39.9 million station is funded by the second phase of the Earthquake Safety and Emergency Response bond.
