Homegrown Chicago (IL) Fire Department Hydrant Adapter

Photographer Tim Olk shared these pictures he took at a recent drill conducted by the Chicago (IL) Fire Department (CFD). Firefighters are often faced with hydrants that have had the threads stolen, as shown in the image below.

Having repeatedly faced this situation, a CFD lieutenant (now a chief) worked to develop a hydrant tool firefighters could use to take what appeared to be a hydrant out of service and use it. Working with the city’s water department, the lieutenant designed the tool shown below.

To use this adapter, a firefighter fits it onto the hydrant, gives is a half turn, and the hydrant is usable. According to Olk, there are no leaks once fitted properly onto the hydrant. The adapter features a pushbutton release to remove it from the hydrant.
