After 70 years, Plymouth Twp. Fire Rescue Tilbury Station 169 abruptly ended operations, reports The Citizens’ Voice.
A township spokesman said the fire department had more debt than the township could take on.
The trouble appears to have begun a decade ago, when the station took out a roughly half-a-million-dollar U.S. Department of Agriculture loan to upgrade its facility.
The department relied on fundraisers such as its annual haunted house and a weekly bingo game to make the payments.
