The Queen Creek (AZ) Fire Station 1 project, despite being a station with the apparatus floor in the middle of flanking crew areas, has some merit that the F.I.E.R.O. Jury appreciated. The ambitious program resulted in complicated exterior with many corners. But this complexity is calmed by the understated use of materials that help marry the station to the local vernacular while at the same time is complementing the arid landscape. One notable feature is the exam room off the entrance, which the Jury applauds and expects to see more of in the future as fire departments become engaged in community well-being.
