Four Firefighters Injured in Waterbury (CT) Fire Apparatus Crash

Four firefighters were injured in a crash while on their way to a call Thursday night, a fire official said.

The fire truck and a car collided on Oronoke Road shortly after 8:30 p.m. The firefighters were discharged from St. Mary’s Hospital after being treated for bumps and bruises and, in one case, a broken hand, Fire Chief David Martin said.

The two occupants of the car — a Bentley — also had bumps and bruises but declined treatment, he said.

“The vehicle was pulling out of a driveway and T-boned the apparatus,” Martin said. “It appears as though the line of sight in the driveway was not good.”

The fire truck has been heading to a report of smoke in a building at Oronoke Ridge condominiums, he said. The problem turned out to be from a malfunctioning dryer, Martin said.

The crash didn’t impact the response because other fire trucks were headed to the scene, he said.
