KME Fire Apparatus Ordered by City of Ottawa

KME/Metz Fire and Rescue PumperNESQUEHONING, PA—The City of Ottawa Fire Department, Canada, has awarded KME and Metz Fire and Rescue, an order for 12 more custom pumpers. The award is part of a multi-year contract from which KME and Metz have already delivered a dozen engines.

The fire apparatus will once again be built on KME’s Predator™ Severe Service™ chassis. The cab is designed, manufactured, and tested to perform under the most rigorous demands and meets and exceeds all crash/crush and front/side impact testing standards. Ottawa’s cabs will include both frontal collision (4Front™) and rollover protection (RollTek™) for all occupants.

The pumping system includes a top-mount pump panel with 1,500-gpm pump, cold-weather package for extreme winter environments, 600/20 gallons of water/foam, and a Class A foam system.

The body was custom designed to meet the unique needs of Ottawa’s fire department. The body features customized storage for each piece of equipment carried by the department, with everything enclosed to protect equipment from the elements. The preconnects are set up at the rear of the apparatus on one common panel for ease of hookup and replacement. The hose load is protected by a hinged treadplate cover, with a lowered section for LDH supply hose. The top of the apparatus is accessed from an ergonomic ladder for safe climbing.

This purchase is another example of long-term purchase agreements (LTPAs). Such agreements minimize the expenses associated with repetitive public bidding for future purchases and as fleets are more standardized, provide for:

  • Increased driver safety
  • Increased fire ground safety and efficiency
  • Decreased training expenses for both fire and maintenance personnel
  • Decreased parts inventory carrying costs
  • Decreased out of service intervals for maintenance and service

Overall, the LTPA agreement offers cities substantial benefits in the areas of product costs, budget forecasts, and administration and service expenses, all the while providing competitive pricing and audit accountability and the option to go to bid at any time.
