Des Plaines IL Considers Fire Apparatus Purchase

The Des Plaines City Council (IL) committee is considering the purchase of a fire ladder truck from the Lake Zurich Fire Department that could fulfill the department’s desire for a replacement vehicle at a much cheaper cost.

Members of the committee desires to replace a 23-year-old Simon LTI that is in poor condition. The manufacturer is out of business so replacement parts must be custom manufactured.

A total of $1.4 million for a new replacement ladder truck was included in the proposed 2013 budget. The decision to buy a new truck has been put on hold pending the outcome of a study to determine whether two ladder truck companies are necessary in Des Plaines. Even if the decision is to only have one ladder truck operating, this truck is needed as a back-up.

The Lake Zurich truck is a 2000 Pierce with 66,000 miles on it. Ladder trucks are among the biggest vehicles fire departments used coming equipped with ladders that can extend as high as 100 feet.
