New Ceeker Unit Can Detect Anthrax

Issue 11 and Volume 14.

Veritide has developed a new approach to suspicious-powder testing that enables first responders to determine within minutes whether a powder is anthrax or a harmless hoax.

The handheld Ceeker unit uses light to measure the distinctive optical signatures of test samples, determining whether they contain elements associated with bacterial spores.

Testing confirms that the device correctly identifies anthrax 100 percent of the time, and correctly identifies hoaxes 95 percent of the time, the company said.

With the new device, on-site testing is possible and the results are immediate. Unlike other available technologies, Ceeker does not destroy the sample, according to manufacturer reports.

New Zealand-based Veritide develops biological identification and detection solutions. For information, go to www.veritide.com.
