Thorogood and Vibram have teamed up to create a new lightweight fireboot with high traction under extreme conditions.

Called the Black Hornet and equipped with a Vibram non-slip sole, the boot is the latest addition to Thorogood’s Hellfire line. The product sells for a suggested retail price of $275.

“Slip resistance under extreme conditions has been one of the greatest challenges for the firefighter,” said Patrick Miner, vice president of sales and marketing for Weinbrenner, Thorogood’s parent company. “We’ve partnered with Vibram to feature a chiseled-edge sole, giving firefighters the security and confidence they need to focus on their job in top form.”

The new boot delivers slip resistance on wet ice and other extremely slippery conditions. Its varied lug depths with grooves on lug surfaces provide traction on debris, while patterned shank bars provide traction on ladder rungs. The sole incorporates the Vibram FIRE compound for protection and durability. In a laboratory test comparing competitive brands, the Hellfire boot was the most stable boot on ice, according to the manufacturer.

The boot’s fabric shaft, made of Kevlar and Nomex, offers a lightweight alternative to leather. The L-Protection five-layer fabric insole is puncture-resistant and more lightweight than a metal midsole plate. A reinforced leather shin guard offers additional protection.
