Ferrara Strong Arms
The first four of 10 new Ferrara Strong Arms ordered by the City of Istanbul were completed and delivered in November. By the end of 2007, Istanbul had a total of 13 in service, and many were seen in news footage performing rescue operations during building collapses in the city. (Ferrara Photo)

Underwriters’ Laboratories has certified the water flow, lifting capacity and tip load of the Ferrara Strong Arm fire-rescue apparatus. The testing was completed at Ferrara’s manufacturing facility prior to the recent delivery of Strong Arms to Istanbul, Turkey.

The Strong Arm, manufactured by Gradall and exclusive to Ferrara Fire Apparatus, is an articulating and telescoping aerial boom, capable of lifting extremely heavy weights and also flowing up to 1,500 gpm through the patented 5th Man Nozzle. The new apparatus are equipped with screw-in smooth bore nozzles for different water patterns.

While flowing 1,500 gpm at any extension, rotation or elevation, the Strong Arm is capable of lifting in excess of 1,800 pounds, according to the company.

The Istanbul Fire Brigade recently accepted the first Ferrara Strong Arm fire-rescue vehicles in an order of 10.  Four of the trucks were delivered in November, and the remaining six were expected to be delivered by the end of December.

Istanbul took delivery of three Strong Arms in 2005. Istanbul’s trucks are built on Ferrara’s Inferno custom fire chassis and are powered by Cummins ISL-400 engines with Allison 3000EVS transmissions. The independent front suspension is also a drive axle, helping the truck to traverse the rough terrain that is sometimes encountered in northwestern Turkey.

“We’re very happy with the performance of the first three trucks in service,” said Ali Karahan, the head of Istanbul’s Fire Brigade. “So happy in fact, we decided to purchase 10 more units. Since the City of Istanbul sits on an active fault line, these new Strong Arms were ordered with Ferrara’s new all-wheel drive independent front suspension. It’s extremely important for our fire crews to be able to respond in all conditions, including earthquakes.”
