Ferrara Fire Apparatus recently delivered two additional Ferrara Strong Arm firefighting vehicles to the Istanbul (Turkey) Metropolitan Municipality and received an order for 10 more.

The first Strong Arm has been in service since January. The Istanbul Fire Brigade has used it in a variety of fire and rescue operations, according to Chris Ferrara, president and CEO of Ferrara Fire Apparatus.

Built On Ferrara Infernos

The Strong Arm units feature a telescoping Gradall boom built on Ferrara’s Inferno medium, four-door custom fire chassis. The boom telescopes more than 47 feet and can rotate 110 degrees.

The Ferrara Strong Arms have IFS independent front suspensions, Cummins ISL 400 hp diesel engines, Hale Q-Max 2,000 gpm pumps, FoamPro 2001 foam systems, Ferrara’s trademark heavy-duty extruded aluminum bodies, all LED lighting, and CAPS, Ferrara’s complete airbag protection system protecting all outboard seating positions.

Chris Ferrara said the Strong Arm is suited for a wide variety of roof, window and wall ventilation applications. Its 1,100-pound 5th Man Piercing Nozzle is fabricated of stainless steel for heavy-duty continuous use in brutal environments.

The nozzle has a fortified hardened piercing tool at the tip. This allows pinpoint accuracy combined with compelling force during roof or wall ventilation, controlled demolition or other specialized fire ground firefighting operations, according to the manufacturer.

The Strong Arm can also be used to deliver 1,500 gpm through 52 individual aqua-jet nozzles that produce a 50-foot water curtain to quickly extinguish fire in confined spaces.

It is capable of penetrating a 6-inch solid concrete structure. The company said it is no match for asphalt shingle or slate roofs, lap siding exterior walls, box cars, tractor trailers, mobile homes, or steel storage buildings and sea going containers. The Strong Arm can also act as a crane, lifting up to 10,000 pounds.

“The Istanbul Fire Brigade and the city administration had the vision and foresight to ‘think outside the box,'” said Joel Domangue, Ferrara’s aerial sales and product manager. “They identified the Strong Arm as a multi-functional special operations vehicle that had the versatility and capability to address a wide variety of fire and rescue emergencies.”

15 Million Population

The Istanbul Fire Brigade serves a population of some 15 million people in a highly congested, extremely busy 90-square-mile area, according to Domangue.

A delegation from the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality recently visited Ferrara’s manufacturing headquarters to inspect the facility and to review and evaluate its products and services.

Domangue said the delegation awarded Ferrara a contract on 10 additional all-wheel Drive Strong Arm firefighting vehicles during the visit.

Ferrara Fire Apparatus is a leading manufacturer of fire and rescue apparatus located in Holden, La. Chris Ferrara founded the company in 1982.

Ferrara builds a complete line of fire apparatus including aerial ladders, platforms and Strong Arm firefighting vehicles, custom and commercial pumpers, tankers and rescues, hazmat and quick attack vehicles, command trailers as well as Ferrara’s own custom fire chassis, the Inferno and Igniter featuring IFS independent front suspensions and heavy-duty 4-wheel drive.
