APPLETON, Wis. – Pierce Manufacturing has been awarded a contract with the U.S. Army to produce four 2,500-gallon tanker/tenders built on Oshkosh heavy tactical trucks.
The apparatus will be delivered in December and January, according to Pierce, under the terms of a low rate initial production which will allow the military to test the apparatus and determine what it will take to build the units.
Each of the units will be on Oshkosh Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Trucks (HEMTT) and the units will be called HEWATTs, short for Heavy Expanded water tenders. They are being ordered by the U.S. Army Tank-automotive and Armaments Command (TACOM).
Designed to provide structural and airfield crash-rescue support, the HEWATTs will provide support to Pierce’s Tactical Fire Fighting (TFFT).
The new HEWATTs have been designed to operate over varied terrain, ranging from firm ground to soft soils, and under extreme conditions. The HEWATT water tenders are designed to support the TFFT while providing supplementary fire suppression capabilities.
“This contract signifies a significant step in our growing relationship with TACOM in our ability to provide new product and meet the military’s needs,” said Jim Parker, vice president government sales and homeland security at Pierce Manufacturing. “The new water tenders are also an excellent example of the shared technologies employed by Pierce and our parent company Oshkosh Truck Corporation to build a vehicle that delivers tremendous performance and outstanding value.”
The HEWATT water tenders will be equipped with a 2,500 gallon integrated water tanks, Detroit Diesel 455 hp electronic engines, two-person seating, 8 x 8 axle configuration, Oshkosh two-speed transfer cases, Allison five-speed automatic transmissions, bolt together wheels and a corrosion protection upgrade package.
Pierce is a subsidiary of Oshkosh Truck Corporation and a leading North American manufacturer of custom fire apparatus. Products include custom and commercial pumpers, aerials, rescue trucks, wildland trucks, mini-pumpers, elliptical tankers, and homeland security apparatus.
In addition, Pierce designs its own foam systems and was the first company to introduce the Side Roll Protection System to fire apparatus.
