TURNER -- Smoke billowed from the second-story window of a home on Bryant Road late Monday morning as firefighters from at least five towns worked to bring the fire under control.
Firefighters propped a ladder against the exterior of oneof the cape at 133 Bryant Road. A firefighter at the top of the ladder aimed a hose through an open window from which smoke poured.
Departments from Turner, Buckfield, Livermore, Greene and Leeds staged along the road, pumping water into a portable holding pool, then pumping it from there through several hoses.
A firefighter cut a hole in the roof of the cape in an effort to vent the smoke. No flames were visible from outside the home. Red glowed from inside a doorway into an ell attached to the back of the main building.
According to assessing records, the home is owned by Miles Tobey and the building is valued at just over $50,000. A private "For Sale" sign stood out front.
At one point, an engine from Buckfield slid into a ditch along the unplowed road, but it later was back on the road.Copyright 2012 ProQuest Information and Learning
