Knoxville Gets 3 Ferrara Apparatus

The Knoxville (Tenn.) Fire Department recently took delivery of three additional Ferrara Fire Apparatus custom emergency vehicles.

The order consisted of two 100-foot rear-mount platforms and one custom rescue pumper, all built on Ferrara’s heavy-duty Igniter cab and chassis.

All three trucks are powered by Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines, rated at 515 horsepower. The cabs are medium 4-door units with 8-inch raised roofs. The platform cabs are notched to accommodate the aerial devices. Each of the bodies is Ferrara’s extruded aluminum with 3/16-inch thick compartments to carry lots of equipment.

The platforms are configured as traditional truck companies, with no pump or tank. Compartments ahead and over the wheels are transverse for maximum storage.

All three trucks are equipped with Harrison MCR 8,000-watt pto hydraulic generators, complete with lighting, receptacles and cord reels.

The aerial platforms features 21 square feet of working area, a 500-pound capacity rappelling arm with Stokes mount, two equipment storage boxes each, breathing air and dual Elkhart monitors.

The pumper has dual emergency medical service (EMS) cabinets inside the cab. Like other engines in the KFD fleet, this unit has a Hale Qmax 1,500-gpm, top-mount pump and 500-gallon tank. The extruded aluminum body has left and right side rescue-style compartments, shelves and trays and a hydraulic ladder rack.

The Knoxville Fire Department, led by Chief Robert Key, operates 42 fire and rescue vehicles in its 18 stations. KFD protects roughly 175,000 citizens spread out over 100 square miles. These three trucks make a total of eight Ferrara Fire Apparatus vehicles in service to the city.

The most recent apparatus completed for the city were sold by Jeff Bagwell of Ferrara Fire Apparatus, Holden, La., for a total price of $2 million.
