SEAGRAVE FIRE APPARATUS recently received an order for a dive/rescue unit from the Louisville (KY) Fire Department/Jefferson County (KY) Metro Government. This single-axle apparatus falls within Seagrave's Specialist Rescue configuration with modifications for unique requirements. It will feature Seagrave's Marauder II chassis with a Cummins ISX 500 HP engine, an Allison EVS 4000 transmission, a Harrison 20-kW hydraulic generator, and a Command Light tower for on-scene lighting. The 154-inch stainless steel split-tilt cab has seating for six and features a 16-inch raised roof and a cab-to-body walk-through. The Matrix body is stainless steel with a walk-in/walk-around configuration, allowing the responders to put their gear on inside. The new unit will replace a 1990 light-duty vehicle that served as a dive rescue response vehicle.

GLOBE MANUFACTURING recently donated $70,000 worth of turnout gear to the Heart of the Pines (TX) Fire Department. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition decided to build a new home for two firefighters in wildfire-ravaged Texas and also rebuilt their fire station. That is where the donation from Globe came in. In making the announcement about the partnership with Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Globe's senior vice president of sales and marketing, Rob Freese, says, "Globe is so happy we had a chance to be a part of this special show. These dedicated men and women risked their lives to protect others. We're glad to be able to help protect them so they can come home to their families. Globe has a long history of giving back, and this family and this department is one of the most deserving we've been involved with." The episode is expected to air next Christmas.

E-ONE has announced that the Little Rock (AR) Fire Department (LRFD) placed an order for a new HP 100 ladder and two custom Cyclone II pumpers with E-ONE and Sunbelt Fire, the exclusive E-ONE dealer for Arkansas. The three-truck order consists of the department's second HP 100 ladder and two of the department's first top-mount pumper configurations. LRFD apparatus committee members walked the E-ONE plant floor to garner ideas from customer units in process when designing the highly custom apparatus. The result was the addition of vista roofs on the pumpers for additional storage and internal compartments to safely house paperwork and binders.

NFPA 1971 Revision on Turnout Gear Delayed

Issuance of the 2012 edition of NFPA 1971, Standard on Protective Ensembles for Structural Fire Fighting and Proximity Fire Fighting, has been delayed because of several challenges. The proposed standard, which was expected to be issued in January, has had seven challenges made relating to gloves and footwear. No challenges were made on the standard with regard to turnout gear, helmets, or hoods.

The challenges are in the form of a notice of intent to make a motion (NITMAM) says Karen Lehtonen, a member of the NFPA 1971 standard committee and director of products for Lion. All of the tests being challenged already are in the current version of the standard, Lehtonen notes.

The NITMAMs (challenges) will be heard at the NFPA membership meeting, June 11 to 14, in Las Vegas. Lehtonen estimated that the publication date for the 2012 standard would be sometime in August or September.
