Los Angeles Picks KME To Build 23 Pumpers

KME Fire Apparatus has received an award for 23 pumpers from the Los Angeles City Fire Department. The contract is in addition to two water tenders in production for the department.

The apparatus will be built on the KME Predator Severe Service chassis with 450-hp engines, cab fire curtain enclosures, customized gear storage compartments and LED lighting packages.

Pumper features include 1,750-gpm pumps, Class A foam systems and 500-gallon water tanks with 30-gallon foam tanks. The pump panel is designed to keep a common layout that the Los Angeles City Fire Department has used on apparatus for generations. The aluminum body is equipped with customized toolboxes and SCBA and wildland gear storage. The pumpers have a short wheelbase and high angle of approach/departure that has been successful for the department for years.

“The city joins fleets from coast to coast in the selection of the KME Predator Severe Service pumper as the best overall value,” said John J. Kovatch III, CEO of KME Fire Apparatus.

The units were sold through KME’s Factory Sales and Service Center in Ontario, Calif. Deliveries will begin in mid-2010.

KME, part of the Kovatch Organization based in Nesquehoning, Pa., is a custom manufacturer of a full range of specialty vehicles. For information, go to www.kovatch.com.
