The Mesilla Fire Department (NM) will receive a new fire truck Monday that they financed by giving up their stipends.

After a general obligation bond that would have paid for the new truck as well as renovations to the town's public safety building did not pass in the last election, the volunteer fire department agreed to give up their stipends in order to pay for the much needed truck.

"When the bond vote failed, not a single firefighter quit," Mesilla Fire Chief Kevin Hoban said. "Instead they stepped up and made this happen. They realized the need and met that need."

The Spartan Metro Star X pumper is first Type 1 pumper Mesilla has received since 1994. The unit will replace a 1987 pumper.
