Donated Mason Firetruck Enroute to Kosovo

08/07/2012

A 1984 decommissioned Mason firetruck is making the 5,000 mile trek to Vitina, Kosovo. The truck was picked up Monday and is on its way to Selfridge Air National Guard Base (MI).

The father of a Mason resident was in town from Vitina and was impressed with the equipment at the Mason Fire Department, which serves fewer people than the 25-person force in Kosovo.

"This is going to a city of about 60,000 people who has about two to three trucks. They have about a third of the trucks we have for 8,000 people. So for a city of 8,000 to make a difference in the lives of 60,000, is really quite phenomenal," said Chief Kerry Minshall with the Mason Fire Department.

City Council members gave the go-ahead to donate the truck as long as it would not cost the city money.

The truck, along with items from several other area fire departments and the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, should arrive in September.
