California's democratic representative, Laura Richardson, has proposed legislation allowing fire stations around the nation apply for grants of up to $100,000 to build restrooms, showers and changing facilities specifically for women, according to a report from The Hill.
The report indicates that these grants would help promote gender equality in fire houses according to The Fairness in Restrooms Existing in Stations (FIRE Stations) Act, H.R. 3753.
Findings state that most facilities were built under a "single-gender workforce" mind set. It also states that women make up just 3.7 percent of all firefighters and that 50 percent of all fire departments have no female employees.
